Writing About Poetry
The poem "The Raven" is written by Edgar Allan Poe. This poem is about a man who is going through the sorrow of his lost love Lenore. One midnight in December a man was sitting in his room thinking about Lenore while somebody knocked at the door. The December was the darkness month of the year. At first he heard knocking at the door but then he heard somebody knocking at the window-lattice. He feared to come to the door because it was late, but then he goes to the door feeling sorry not opening the door. He opened the door and he discovered the raven. When he opened the door the raven entered and began to sit regally on top of a statue. The man was asking the raven what his name is but the raven only said "nevermore".
The mood of this story is very sad because his love Lenore had died. He really cared about her because he was thinking about her. For example, "From my books surcease of sorrow, -sorrow for the lost Lenore"- As you can see this sentence means that his love one has died. "For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angle name Lenore." This sentence means that he really loved her because she was like his garden angel that always was with him. And I think that it also means that she was so good to him and nice like that angel. This is really sad because it is so hurting losing somebody that he really cared for. The mood of the story is also very suspenseful because we didn’t know who that bird was. The strange bird just flew inside his house that he never saw before. When he asked his name he would only say nevermore. For example, "Tell me what thy lordly name is on the Night’s Plutonian shore!" Quoth the Raven "Nevermore" It was really scared and it is also suspenseful because we don’t know who that raven is. It might be his love Lenore we don’t know. This poem has a very nice rhyme scheme. Every stanza in this poem has the same rhyme scheme. For example the first stanza has a rhyme scheme like this "dreary rhymes with weary, lore rhymes with the fifth sixth and seventh line the tapping doesn’t rhyme and door, door and more rhyme with third line as I said. The rhyme scheme is the same in every stanza like this "a a b c b b b." The poet uses assonance in this poem, which really makes the poem enjoyable reading. An example of assonance in " The Raven" is "…uncertain rustling of each purple curtain." This poem is also special because it has alliteration. The example of the alliteration in the poem is "Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before." This really is a very good example of the alliteration because it shows us the first letters of the words are the same and they repeat. The most thing that I liked in the poem is the repetition. In this poem is used that the last word in every eight stanza the word ends with more. For example the first stanza has " Only this and nothing more" The second stanza ends with evermore, the third ends with more and so on. I think that you get the idea. I guess that it is all that the poet uses for the poetic devices. The setting of this poem is at midnight because it says in the poem that "Once upon a midnight dreary…" It says in the first sentence of the first stanza that it was at midnight. The poem also took place in a chamber. It took place in the room because the poet spent the time in his room reading books. And while he was in his room somebody was knocking at his chamber door. For example, "Tis some visitor, I muttered, tapping at my chamber door," So as you can see almost in every stanza it has to do something with his room because he was in his room all the time. It also was in December. I think that it was in December because it was the darkest month of the year. For example "Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December," It said clearly that it was in the December. The setting was very scary because it took at midnight and in the darkest month of the year.
The most things that I liked about the poem are the way he uses the Old English words. I liked because this way we can see how long time ago people uses their English language in the poems. Not only is it good because it is hard to understand and we will have to read the poem over and over again, this will help us practice our reading skills. I also like hard poems because this way I know that I have to try hard to understand it and this really make the poem interesting and it is not boring. We also can learn a lot of new vocabulary words that we never heard of. The most that I like about the words is the way he wrote in Old English and the way he put them in the stanza. I liked it because they rhyme and it really made it easy for me to remember. The subject was very interesting because he used his imagination. We know that the ravens don’t talk. I think that’s whay the subject was interesting. The suspense made the poem mysterious because we didn’t know who that raven was. It could be his love Lenore, but we don’t know that for sure, the only thing that we know is that his name is Nevermore. I liked the way the words appeared on the page because they were divided into eight stanzas very clearly. The sentences rhyme and the last word of each stanza repeats with the word "MORE." This way it is easier for us to recognize where the stanza ends. The sad mood of the poem puts me in a very sad way because I liked the way he said about his love. It was very touching because even though his love is dead he still doesn’t stop loving her. I really liked that poem because I like romantic poems and this poem also have some parts that were very romantic. The raven in this poem keeps reminding me of my young years when I was a child. I lived in the village at that moment because I still was in Poland. I remember that when I saw a raven I used to run and cry because I thought that the raven is a witch and it will take me away from my parents. This moment I will never forget. I also thought that it is pig and it will bite me. I don’t know why I thought that but any way this is what it made me remember when I read this poem. I like the way I felt like it was I in that poem because I really sometimes feel very sad because my best friend in Poland died. And I know how the poet felt. I was scared too and sad. I even imagine strange things that he is alive and he came to my house to ask me to play with him. I had many different imaginations because I really miss him.
